Lesson 3 – Through Your Character’s Eyes

Stephanie saw Katy’s black high heels walking towards the bed from where she was hiding. She hoped she could stay quiet enough under the bed not to be caught out.

“Why are you in bed at lunch time Kev?” she asked her husband

“Oh, I’m just feeling shagged” came his reply. Stephanie rolled her eyes while both corners of her mouth started to raise a smile. That’s one of the things she loved about her ‘special moments’ with Kevin: it wasn’t just the completely amazing sex, they had a lot of fun and laughs during their time together every day they managed to grab some time alone.

“Well,” Katy sat on the bed and Stephanie watched the bed cave ever so slightly above her head. She turned her head to the side. She didn’t need to as Katy didn’t really weigh much, Stephanie knew that just by looking at her each time they met. She often wondered if Katy ever ate much food because there really was no waist on her to talk about. Stephanie often thought that if Katy ever turned sideways you would lose her.

“I’ve got something to tell you Kev, and you are not going to like it” Katy was telling her husband “It’s hard to say but…” her words trailed off.

“Are you about to tell me you’ve been fired again?” Kevin asked. “Isn’t this the third time in what, not even two years?”

“Oh shut up Kevin!” she snapped back “This is one of the reasons I am leaving you. You always interrupt when I am trying to talk to you and when you do, it is always with an insult or, or, or you are assuming I have done something wrong” Stephanie could hear Katy was getting agitated. Did she just hear right? Katy is leaving him? Stephnie had the biggest widest grin on her face now. This could make things a little easier she was thinking when she heard Kevin move really quickly above her. It sounded like he suddenly bolted up she thought. Surprised maybe? She kept listening.

“What did you say?” he sounded angry Stephanie thought quite bemused. “You’re… leaving… You’re leaving me?” What was Kevin’s problem? Wasn’t it the plan that Kevin and Stephanie were going to come clean about their feelings for each other as soon as possible? They were just waiting for the ‘right’ time. Stephanie was so tired of all the ducking and diving and keeping their eyes and ears open to make sure they weren’t found out before they could tell their other halves themselves. Fourteen long months was long enough for her but Stephanie couldn’t work out why Kevin was sounding so upset about this wonderful news.

“Who is he?” Kevin demanded. Wow. Stephanie had never heard him sound so angry before. He really was not happy about this. She felt a tiny bit scared.

“Well,” Katy spoke quietly now. Stephanie struggled to hear her speaking clearly. “You might as well know. You’ll find out soon enough I suppose.”

Did she say who it was already? Stephanie didn’t hear.

What was the delay?

Why was it so quiet?

“It’s Dave.”

What did she just say Stephanie thought.

“What did you just say?” Kevin quizzed. Is he reading my mind thought Stephanie. “Did you say DAVE?” By this time Stephanie had clasped her hands over her mouth to muffle her excitement, shock and anger as the feelings came one by one.

“Yes,” said Katy very matter-of-factly. “Now before you go into one…”

“Dave?” Kevin was sounding as shocked as Stephanie felt. “As in Dave? Next door Dave? Married to Stephanie, Dave?

“Yes Yes Yes”snapped Katy “Dave next door.”

A very ironic and clever story. I liked it, especially the way you described Stephanie’s experience under the cot.
