Lesson 1 – Scenes and Excerpts

Alfred noticed a new neighbor, Jenny moving into a townhouse right across the street from where he lived.  He had been noticing for a few days watching his new neighbor unpack her possessions from a U-Haul truck and carry them into her new home.

Alfred was enthralled by all this, so much so that he bought a set of binoculars to have a closer look from his own townhouse across the street.  It looks like my neighbor has a lot of valuable possessions, he thought.  Alfred saw two men carry out a couch, a bed with a beautiful head frame and some oil paintings from the U-Haul truck.  Those things must have cost a fortune, he thought.  I wonder if my neighbor owns diamonds.

Alfred continued to watch the scene from his bedroom, on the second level of his townhouse where he started to make plans in how he could gain entrance into his neighbor’s home.

Before a few months went by, Jenny was settled in her new home before the summer came.  She decided to take a two week vacation in cabins in the mountains.  Alfred noticed that Jenny’s car had not been parked in her driveway for a few days and noticed the house was dark in the evening hours.

The next day Alfred waited to see if the house was still dark and if there was no car in the driveway.  The house was still dark the next day and there was still no car in the driveway.  Alfred decided to make his move.

To avoid as many witnesses as he could, Alfred planned to break into Jenny’s townhouse at 3:00 a.m.  He acquired a shoulder bag to use for the robbery.  He packed the shoulder bag with leather gloves, a flashlight and a crowbar.

The clock struck 3:00 a.m.  Alfred gathered up the shoulder bag with the necessary supplies to pull of the robbery.  He pulled a hood over his head that covered his face to where only his two eyes were visible.  He snuck out the back door of his townhouse and made his way around to the front of his house then walked across the street to Jenny’s house.

He walked around to the back of Jenny’s townhouse and peered in the window.  It was pitch black inside.  He took the crowbar out of his shoulder bag and pried the back door open.  He was now in Jenny’s house.  He tip-toed quietly inside passing through the living room.  Everything was dark and quiet.  He made his way up a staircase that led into Jenny’s bedroom.  He peered inside.  There was no one there.  He went to the dresser and opened the drawers looking for valuables.  He searched the drawers one by one starting from the bottom.  He reached the top drawer.  Well, what do you know, he thought.  It’s just what I thought.  She’s got diamonds.  Alfred packed all of the diamond necklaces in his shoulder bag.  Then he frantically looked through other drawers in vanities and closets looking for more goods.  Alfred pulled his flashlight out of his bag and shown it through the dark closet looking for more goods.  He found a jewelry box tucked away in the closet.  It was without a key.  So, he broke it open.  There was $500 in cash inside.  He packed the cash into his shoulder bag.

Then Alfred heard a noise outside.  There was a stray dog who knocked over a trash can.  The lid went crashing to the concrete.  Alfred didn’t know it was a dog and what it was.  In his haste, he dropped the jewelry box in pieces on the floor.  He ran down the staircase and passed through the living room out of the back door where he had come in.

Jenny, the new neighbor didn’t know that someone was watching her every move when she was moving into her new townhouse.  Jenny returned to her townhouse after being on vacation for two weeks.  She unpacked her belongings from her car, bringing in her suitcases and other items, two items at a time walking back and forth putting them in the living room.  She was tired and just wanted to stretch out for a while.  So, for the time being she let her suit cases sit in the living room while she went to the refrigerator to pour herself some ginger ale with ice.  She left the kitchen with her ginger ale and went back to the living room.  She had a seat on the couch and switched on the TV.  She was watching the news and sipped on her ginger ale.  Then she felt a draft and heard some slight banging of the door against its frame.  What is that? she thought.  She went to the back door.

“Oh, my God,” Jenny screamed.  “My door is open.  Someone broke into my house when I was gone.”

The door had been shattered when it was broken into with the crowbar.

I wonder if my jewels and money are still here?  She thought and ran upstairs into her bedroom.

She walked through her bedroom door and saw that the room had been ransacked.

“My God,” said Jenny.  “The burglar was in here!”

She went over to the dresser and pawed through the drawer.  “My jewels are gone!”

She turned around to her right and saw the jewelry box on the floor broken apart lying there in front of the closet.  She picked up the pieces of the jewelry box.

“Oh, no!” she said.  “All $500 of my money is gone.  Who did this?  What am I going to do?”

Jenny went back downstairs to her phone in the living room and called the police.
